Mamaw’s Banana Nut Bread

September 18, 2019Southern Girl

I found mamaw’s recipe for her banana bread and thought I’d give it a try. Banana bread has been a popular bread since the 1930s and has popping up in cook books ever since. I can see why banana bread has stuck around for so long. It’s perfect as banana nut bread if you want a semi-sweet bread to serve with your breakfast. Want it for more of a dessert? You can add a hand full of chocolate chips to the mix. My one tip is to buy really ripe bananas if you don’t want to have to wait three or four days for your bananas to ripen.

This bread will make your house smell amazing and might just have your family constantly asking you when it’ll be done.

  • Cook time: 1 hour
  • Total time: 1 hour 10 minutes

  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts, (I like walnuts)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup mashed bananas, (make sure they are really ripe)
  • 2 cups sifted plain powder, (all purpose)

    Grease and flour loaf pan.

  • 2)

Cream Crisco, sugar and beaten eggs in the bowl of an electric mixer.

  • 3)

Put banana through ricer (I used a fork for mashing mine), add lemon juice and add to bowl.

  • 4)

Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Add to creamed mixture. Mix well.

  • 5)

    Add nuts, mix well.

  • 6)

    Pour in prepared loaf pan.

Bake at 325 for 45 – 60 minutes. Make sure to check your oven at 45 minutes and see if done.

There’s nothing like a big slice of banana bread! I also like the fact that your recipe includes nuts, as I’m a big fan of nuts in baking for both the texture and the nutrition. Great recipe to share!
